Fest Louisville
Twelve months of festivals
Louisville packs a full year of celebrations around one horse race. The Derby Festival alone holds more than 70 events, two-thirds of them free, and summer brings free theater and a riverfront festival. A local event planner or the city’s visitor center can help with group trips; these guides cover the dates and the basics.
Each guide is built from the organizers’ and the city’s own pages. Local resources such as neighborhood associations and community calendars list smaller fairs and block parties, while the guides here cover the big events and the weather to expect.

Headliners first: the habits that make the big days easier.
Anchor on the Derby
The Kentucky Derby is always on the first Saturday in May, and much of the spring hangs from it. Thunder Over Louisville opens the Derby Festival two weeks earlier, and the Pegasus Parade kicks off Derby week. Mark the Derby first and the rest of the season falls into place. See Louisville Festival Calendar by Month: The Whole Year at a Glance.
Free is the norm
The Derby Festival says two-thirds of its events are free, and a small Pegasus Pin opens many of the rest. Kentucky Shakespeare has no tickets and no admission charge, and WorldFest, the art show and Light Up Louisville are free to attend. See Derby Festival on a Budget: Free Events and What the Pegasus Pin Covers.
Dress for the month, not the forecast
Thunder-day highs have ranged from the mid-40s to the mid-80s, May is the wettest month at the airport, and July averages a high of 89.0 degrees. Bring a layer for spring nights, water and a hat in summer, and gloves for December. See Louisville Festival Weather by Month: What to Pack and When to Worry.
Arrive early, leave smart
Big riverfront days fill garages and close streets. For Thunder the air show usually starts around 3 p.m. and the fireworks run from 9:30 to 10 p.m., so plan when you will arrive and how you will get home, and check TARC rider alerts for detours. See Thunder Over Louisville: Fireworks, Air Show and How to Do the Day.
Confirm every year
Organizers set exact dates, times and rules each year. Kentucky Shakespeare announces its season in winter, the pumpkin trail and Light Up Louisville publish dates in the fall, and the Kentucky State Fair posts its own. Check the official page before you plan travel. See Louisville Holiday Events: Light Up Louisville and a Downtown Winter Evening.
